I thought it would be enjoyable to have a social to wrap up
the Battle of the Books season that would include some of the foods important
in the books we read this year. I
steered clear of tripe and deep fried silkworms! Maybe you will come up with other ideas, but
this what was what I came up with:
-Kit-kat chocolate bars (The soldier shares this with the Tien
Pao in House of 60 Fathers)
-Pieces of sugarless gum (Tien Pao boy swallows this in House of 60 Fathers)
- Boxes of Sunmaid Raisins (One of the odd foods at Thanksgiving
Dinner in Maniac Magee)
- Pizza (Maniac wins this by untangling Cobble's knot but
cannot enjoy the prize because of his allergy in Maniac Magee)
- A small bag of corn snacks/corn chips (corn is a favourite
food for the mice in Mrs. Frisby and the
Rats of NIMH)
- A bunch of ripe bananas (Ivan's favourite food in The One and Only Ivan, but we will not
eat the peels as he did)
- A package of Peak Freans "Family digestive"
biscuits (they have chocolate on one side and were eaten by Grandpa and Matt at
the protest in Shadow)
-Apples (Aman's mother took the blame for stealing an apple
in Shadow)
-Single serve applesauce
(this is the first food given to Albert in Lily's Crossing)
-Bottle or carton of iced tea ("tea" was enjoyed
at Miss Hazzlit's house in Dancing
Through the Snow)
- Small bag of roasted Sunflower seeds, not in the
shell. (Ling and Chu Ju enjoyed this
snack as they chatted in the evenings in Chu
Ju's House)
- A small sample of candied ginger/crystallized ginger
slices—sold at bulk barn (This was Han Na's favourite treat in Chu Ju's House). These are a bit overpowering to the palate, though!
